It's only the 3rd Found Type Friday and it's a bumper edition:
Ian Fermor from Luton, design and production editor/manager for two motoring magazines (used to work with Derek Birdsall and John Morgan at Omnific), took these excellent images with his camera, which impresses me because mine is such a dinosaur. Top quality images Ian!
David Warwick (excellent flickr stuff, including great images of Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation, Marseille) found this fantastic Thermos box disgarded in the street. I love battered packaging.
It also reminds me of something: I imagine many designers enjoy the thrill of stumbling over their own work "out there", I certainly do; you'll often find me tidying the cheese boxes I designed that Sainsbury's stock. Imagine my excitment then, when holidaying in Greece some years ago, to see a piece of packaging, that I'd designed for a UK company, in the gutter! Brilliant!
Ken Compton, a typography instructor in the US, emailed me this (dare I say) Fletcheresque composition. The "A" was blown off an abandoned warehouse during a hurricane.
Talking of Fletcher, if you haven't been there already, there's a good conversation between the man and Michael Johnson here.
And finally, David Hyde from Celsius just got in with this last minute type crime, shot in Gent, Belgium. About which David quite rightly says, "Questionable use of electronically-condensed Futura, but the real question is where's the question mark? Or is it a statement?"
This reminds me of this, where I've omitted to mention my sorry attempt at setting Helvetica Condensed, many years ago, for my old Creative Director on our early Mac. We didn't have the font so I just squashed the badly drawn System Helvetica 80% and handed it over, only to have it quite rightly thrown back at me. Thankfully, I later learnt the ways of the typographer and came to understand such actions as vandalism. Although, I must admit to learning even later that on very rare occasions, it can be necessary, but that's another story.
Many thanks to Ian, David, Ken, Andy (from earlier in the week) and David for the brilliant contributions.
If anyone else would like to contribute, try using Email Me in my About thing. If that doesn't work leave a comment and I'll give you alternative route.
Come on Ben, you know you want to.
It reminds me the famous Typographic wall from Brownjohn (http://www.slanted.de/577).
