I think that sometimes shocking photography can work really well depending on the subject. I have not read the book but from what has been written about it I can see that the photography fits the mood of the book and helps to display the message. This type of imagery is sometimes needed to grab a readers attention as we are used to seeing similar things again and again. Now, think away from the norm is the way to capture an audience. This works in the same way as the United Colours of Benneton adverts worked as shocking imagery to capture an audience. However, Oliviero Toscani used a completely different subject matter to advertise clothing.
