Mega mapage. Nearly four years ago Jonathan (insect54) Turner emailed me images of his Wim Crouwel/Total Design designed de grote bosatlas. I may be wrong but the impression I get from a swift Google is that this is a kind of Dutch National Atlas, with numerous editions that span many years (the first printed in 1877!).
Jonathan's was from 1968 and has a design credit. The one I found last weekend at Castleward is from 1976. And while it isn't credited to anyone, I do feel the cover type (Helvetica instead of the earlier Akzidenz Grotesk) is a little more elegant. Perhaps it's a bit too perfect. Of course, the real star is the astonishingly diverse and masterfully drafted content.
It is a beauty, the colours are great aren't they.
Funnily enough I stumbled across this a couple of days ago:

I also love the WN logo. I believe it was designed by Otto Treumann.

Lovely! The atlas for Dutch college students. My family went through several incarnations. Still having the one from 1915. Yes WN=Treumann
