Every now and then you stumble across a stand out Penguin (Penguine, if you're Morgan Freeman). This was in the Oxfam Bookshop last week. Published in 1965, that remarkable cover illustration is by Giannetto Coppola, who also did this cover for She Came to Stay.
Great cover design and the rough wooden floor (table?) enhances the grim faces in the illustration. I'm going to have to look more closely next time I'm in my local Oxfam shop.
